This is unconsolidated sediment in the Trent valley flood plain.
Flooding is a major problem.

They quarry sand and gravel. It was more a lesson in environmental management than a geology trip.
We did see cross stratification in the beds.

The aggregate is near the surface and removed by digging it out.

Areas where sand martins were nesting are not disturbed until the young have left the nests.

The area has to be lined with clay before it can be infilled with inert waste

Some of this clay has to be brought to the site

Normally the land would have been left to flood.
However the land is near East Midlands airport.
Birds could have been dangerous so close to the runway.

More bedding in the sand
