John Briggs Leadbeater was born in Manchester about 1847.

There is no record of this and it is believed that he was adopted by Edward Leadbeater following his own parents deaths, a not uncommon occurrence in 1850's Manchester working class areas. See note on Edward Leadbeater at bottom of page.

He Married Barbara Richardson (Daughter of William richardson and Jane Stubbs) in Wray Parish Church on September 18th 1869. He shows his father as Edward Leadbeater.

Barbara died in 1874 leaving 3 young sons, William, Edward and Joseph Leadbeater.

John then married Margaret who was born about 1840 (1881 census)

His children (all born Lancaster) are

Here he is with two of his sons.

Edward Leadbeater.

I have found a marriage certificate at Manchester Cathedral for 30th March 1851 between Edward Leadbeater and Mary Ann Briggs.

They are both aged 32

and Edward is a bootmaker.

I checked the address given in Hazel Street Hulme on the 1851 census, Lavinia Leadbeater was living there.
The next schedule was for a family called Briggs, husband and wife from Cornwall. Is this the benefactor who adopted John Briggs Leadbeater or is he an illegitimate sone of Mary Ann?
I would welcome any further information.
