John Briggs Leadbeater married Barbara Richardson in
Wray Parish Church on September 18th 1869.

Barbara was born on 20th June 1851 in Beaumouth, Near Carlisle

Her parents were William Richardson and Jane Stubbs

Barbara died from scarletina in 1874 leaving three young sons.

On the 1881 census, John Briggs Leadbeater states he was born in Manchester, about 1847.
There is no record of this and it is believed that he was adopted by Edward Leadbeater following his own parents deaths, a not uncommon occurrence in 1850's Manchester working class areas.

On the 1881 census I found the following record.

Joseph Leadbeater married Edith Heslop in St. Mary's Parish Church, South Shields on September 30th 1899. Edith died in 1961 and Joseph in 1945.
Edith Heslop was the daughter of Thomas Heslop and Mary Scott.
She was born in Westoe, South Shields on July 29th 1876.
I found the following entry on the 1881 census.
26 Frances Street, Westoe
Thomas Heslop Coal Trimmer age 43 B. South Shields
Mary Heslop Wife 42 South Shields
Sarah Heslop Daughter 15 South Shields
Matthew Heslop Son 13 South Shields
Frederick Heslop Son 13 South Shields
Thomas Heslop Son 11 South Shields
Edith Heslop Daughter 8 South Shields
Mary Jane Heslop Daughter 4 South Shields
Kate Heslop Daughter 2 South Shields
James S. Heslop Son 2m South Shields
Thomas Heslop and Mary Scott married in South Shields early in 1863 (10a - 616)

From her marriage and birth certificates, Edith was only 5 year old at the date of the census, probably a transcribers error.

Edith and Joseph had several children.

At 36 Johnson Street, South Shields on 27th April 1912 at 15.00 twins were born,  Mary Jane Briggs Leadbeater and 15 minutes later, Joseph Briggs Leadbeater.

Mary Jane died aged 1

There were other siblings, some shown on the 1911 census.

John Leadbeater b1901 South Shields
Edith Leadbeater b1903 (Married William Godfrey Robinson) South Shields
Barbara Leadbeater b 1907 South Shields
Margery Leadbeater b 1910 South Shields
Eleanor and Joseph were not on this census (born after this date??)

Joseph Briggs Leadbeater married Elsie, daughter of Alfred and Helen Henderson in 1938
They had children Richard Briggs , Joseph , Michael , Keith and Susan May. Sadly Michael died in March 2006.

Edward Leadbeater married another Heslop sister and lived in South Shields. His son Edward had a daughter Lorna. I know very little about this line of the family.

I have a lot more research to complete on this family line.
